A helmet yes - the rest depends on how high your pain threshhold is and whether you mind the scars.

Depending upon your weight and also if you have a geared bike your bike might be able to get up to and near to 60mph on a good day.
Hennce why you'd be a muppet to not wear anything less than bike gloves, jacket and trousers. At 50mph if you crash with only jeans, sports jacket and helmet you will loose most you your knee caps skins right off, jacket will be worn through on front or back, guess the rest, and as for your hands well you'll be lucky to use them again for writing let alone wiping your arse.
Be safe and wear the proctective gear.
