Do I have to remove the front wheels on my 2000 Jeep Cherokee to change the shocks? ?

I can access all of the bolts, it's not a coil-over suspension, so there's no issue with having to compress the springs, is that right? Most information I've seen talks about removing the wheels to get to the bottom bolts, but I can see no reason to do so. Is there any reason this can't be done? With the great ground clearance, I can easily fit underneath with room to work. I'm just hoping to be safe and do this the right way since I'm not much of a mechanic yet. Thanks so much!
