I'm trying to get the game counter-strike source to work on my mac computer and boot camp says I should make a backup of my computer. do I really need to make one and, if yes, why?
You do not have to make a back-up. However, if you don't make one and something goes horribly wrong with boot camp that messes up your computer, then you're out of luck. However, the chances of that happening are slim, so it won't be absolutely necessary to make up a backup.
