Do I Have to Buy a T-Mobile Phone For My T-mobile Plan?

I am planning on buying my best friend a cell phone for Christmas. She is with T-mobile plan. I want it to be a surprise, and I know you can remove your SIM card and put it in a new phone. So if I buy her a phone off Ebay or Amazon or another online website do I have to buy a T-Mobile phone, or just any phone? She does not have a data plan, but I will not be buying an iPhone or anything that requires a data plan, just a basic phone that is better then the piece of crap she has. :) Thanks!
