Do I get the title to my used car after I've purchased it from a dealership?

I purchased my car but did not receive the title. I was under the impression that I owed the bank the money they gave me to purchase the car but the car is mine (hence I should have the title) even though I'm still responsible for the debt. However, the lender has the title... I'm confused. Can someone help? Thanks.
