Do girls judge on looks? ?

Like I know I'm not ugly, but what makes it possible to have a personality overshadow looks? Every girl I like they either like the long swooshy hair, or really skinny with gauges and piercings. I'm a built guy with short clean cut hair. Idk what I'm doing wrong or do girls go thru phases
