Do elliptical exercise machines actually do anything?

You know those elliptical trainer machines at the gym, I wanna try one I've heard a few of my weightlifting friends trashing ellipticals saying they don't do anything for you as far as fat burning and such. Is that true?? I already have Tony Little's worthless Gazelle Glider from a few years back, so I'm a bit skeptical about getting an elliptical now. Thanks for any help <3
