Do drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol really affect your singing voice?

A lot of people say that singers with rough voices (like Kurt Cobain, Brody Dalle, etc.) have that kind of voice because they drink hard liquor, smoke a pack a day, and do heroin or whatever, but I'd like to know how much of an affect these things actually have on a person's voice. I'm just wondering because I'm a girl and I sing with a sort of rough/raspy rock voice, and I've never touched any of that stuff.
