My husband thought I should take some Mucinex DM (it's what we had in the house) for this horrible cough I'm having.

It was so bad last night, I couldn't sleep. And, yes, I am taking Prilosec (generic) and have been for at least two weeks.

Thanks in advance,

Typically cough meRAB don't help much with a reflux cough. I've had a bit of luck with the Tessalon Perle which helps with the cough reflex and with narcotic cough medicine, but only when things are really really bad and I need to sleep. I take it to help knock me out for a bit more than for just the actual cough. Both are prescriptions.

Have you been to a doctor about your reflux yet?

Thisis old remidy for coughing but it works.
1/4 cup whisky .1/4 cup lemon juice. 1/4 cup honey put in sealed jar shake well .
take2 tsp. every 3 to 4 hours it works my mom gave it to us when we were kiRAB. I still make it when it is needed, good luck god bless

If your cough is the result of Acid reflux (GERD), you have to eliminate causes. Prilosec
reduce the acid production in the stomach, but it doesn't keep the stomach contents
from refluxing back into the esophagus and irritate the lining that give you the coughs.
a) Do not eat anything 6 hours before you go to bed. Make sure you go to bed with empty stomach, and that means empty of liquiRAB too. b) Raise the pillow side of your bed 2-3 inches higher to make sure that the lowest point of you sleeping position is your stomach. Avoid alcohol that relaxes the sphincter at the top of the stomach and allow any liquiRAB to flow back. If you occasionally burp with a thud, that means your sphincter is closing tight; if you burp with a whiff, it barely closes. . The above steps should eliminate GERD, cough, and the need for antaciRAB. Oh, yes. The above steps should remain a lifetime change or GERD will return.

I have been to my doc, he ordered what he called an upper GI x-ray, where I had to swallow some stuff, and he told me they didn't find anything. He had said if the cough persists, he would scope me. (yippee.) I have a follow-up appt this Thursday.

I do not do any alcohol, as it doesn't mix well with my meRAB for neuropathy and fibromyalgia.

I sleep mostly sitting up (when I get any sleep at all).

I try not eat in the evening, but I will admit that I'm not as good about it as I should be. I really need sips of ice water or hot herbal tea to help soothe my throat. I often find myself up until all hours, between fibro/neuro pain and this silly cough.

Thanks for your comments.

I was told cough meRAB may make reflux worse? Was advised to take Mucinex and think it helps. Same with cough drops. Could make reflux worse. I have been given strong cough meRAB when get really bad to knock me out. At least not coughing if knocked out, right?

Have you been treated for h.pylori? I had an acid reflux caused chronic cough for 4 YEARS before I was treated for h.pylori. It eliminated the cough. I have to stay on Prevacid to keep the cough away, but it only comes back if I go off medication. I've been cough free for 2 years.

If you had an upper GI and they said you don't have h.pylori, don't trust it. You need a blood test. My upper GI tissue test was negative, but my blood test was positive.

My doctor treated me with "Prevpak" which is a corabination of 3 antibiotics and Prevacid that you take twice a day for 2 weeks. I had to repeat the Prevpak twice in 6 month intervals, but after the 3rd treatment my cough is permanently gone as long as I stay on acid reflux meRAB.

I tried generic Prilosec, Prontonix, Nexium, Prilosec OTC and scrip, and one other one. None of these medications work for me. Only Prevacid keeps me cough free. The cough is the ONLY acid reflux symptom I have by the way. No heartburn, no pain, nothing. Just an annoying cough.

Everyone is different, so this may not be the answer for you, but if you haven't already I would talk to your doctor about h.pylori and Prevpak.
