Do Christians really think they are "planting seeds" whenever they make an

atheist read some god-blurb ...? ... even if we assume some "seed" of thought is indeed being planted, in what way can such Christians be sure that the germinating thought is one that would favour Christianity?

Is it just naiveness in thinking that whatever they say is pure gold, that they could never have said something that would make people further disinterested in what they have to say, maybe wishful thinking - or are Christians who claim & say this sort of thing just trying to seek comfort in an imaginary scenario rather than accept that their attempts were truly futile?
^... it's as if it is some sort of mental defense mechanism.
I'm no closer to being a christian though, if anything, seeing your question moved me further away.
