Do Christians look back at when abortion was a criminal act and think, “Those...
...were the good old days”? There were much fewer women in the work force then because having a baby as a teenager pretty much ruled out going to college or a having a successful career. There was a flourishing black market trade in back alley abortions and emergency wards in hospitals were often busy with teenage girls who were terribly and permanently injured in botched abortions. Poverty and crime levels were high in society because teenage girls who couldn’t get an education were forced to turn to prostitution to get enough money to survive and feed the children. Their children would grow up knowing their mother’s a whore and this would in turn increase their likelihood of living a criminal’s life.
But when abortion was decriminalized, all this changed. Teenage girls who made an error of judgment or were forced into sex by a dominant boyfriend and got pregnant could get a safe abortion carried out by a trained professional. They could then turn their lives around, go to college, get a career and form a stable relationship with a devoted partner with whom they raised a family. Children raised in this environment have much better chances of becoming contributing members of society as opposed to criminals. This is how decriminalizing abortion has improved our society but why do Christians see this as evil and see this as a sign of society falling instead of improving?
