do bipolar people, use their illness as an excuse for their irrational behaviour?

is it genuine that during a manic state bp pple can do irrational things?
and if u are bipolar, and u know it, do u sometimes act like u are having a manic phase but ur actually normal ? just so u can get away with stuff ?
