Do Big Cats and Bears really do bad in captivity, or does it depend on the owner,...

...sanctuary, zoo, etc.? I have a next door neighbor that has been keeping big cats and bears as pets. He got a Black Bear and a Leopard. His bear lived for 19 years when he died. His leopard lived to be 17 years old when she died. Yes, the bear was a male and the leopard was a female. Each was fed when necessary, given baths, got handling, and got big areas to live in. People say that large carnivores are dangerous, and they will eventually kill you. Before he got his big animals, he had 2 guns(not tranquilizers, he felt real guns were better in a public danger situation that involved real guns). But he never used them. They were tamed, and seemed to be happy and affectionate if they knew he was nearby. He says this is one of his greatest experiences in life. I believe the planning and research took more than 10 years.
Don't worry, he and I live in a state where keeping such animals is legal.
