Do betta fish need to have a clear tank?

I am taking care of my friend's betta and I am afraid that the tank is way too small so I want to switch it to a different tank but I was wondering if the tank has to be clear? I would just be able to see it from the top if I made the switch. So can someone tell me if this is a good idea?

It doesn't have to be clear if this is not a long term operation. I would say that the betta would be perfectly fine in an opaque tank, however, I do suggest scooping it into a glass occaisonally to check the fish in full view for disease or ailments on the skin.

If you are taking care of a friends fish, Id say leave it alone and in that tank. Unless you absolutely know what you are doing, your friend will come back to a dead fish.

Also, if you can only see it from the top, you cant really see if anythings wrong. When you can see his sides, you get a pretty good hint if the fish has a disease of some sort.
