do ammonia free hair dyes actually not damage hair?

in the summer I wanted to try out my hair as a golden chocolate color (my hair is naturally dirty blonde-ish). but I don't want it to be permanent, so if I don't like it, it will be gone by the time I go back to school. I wanted one like Clairols Natural Instincts which is ammonia free, and it claims to actually help prevent dryness. I do need something that will not dry out/damage my hair bc my hair is naturally pretty dry.

So will an ammonia-free low peroxide semi-permanent dye damage/dry out my hair or not? oh and BQ: which semi-permanent dye is the best?
