I hear a lot of debate about the teaching of evolution in schools in America, never in Europe. The only other people who seriously doubt evolution (or will stand by Genesis as fact) are the really fundamentalist Jews and some of the less open minded Muslims.

Even the Catholic church can cope with evolution and they are not known for there tolerance to scientific heresy.

Why is this such a big issue for Americans? And do they realize how foolish and backwards they look to people in other western countries?

Please take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory before deciding it is only a theory...

As a slight aside, if you remove the THEORY of evolution from schools then how about atomic THEORY, quantum THEORY, Einstein's special THEORY of relativity, circuit THEORY, music THEORY etc.?

I have come across very few people in my life that seriously doubt evolution. I keep seeing people post stuff like "if humans evolved from monkeys, then why are there still monkeys around" and I'm a little dumbfounded by it. I know people all around the country and I can't think of any that deny evolution, let alone ask such a retarded question. I think that there are a lot of home schooled kids raised by christian fundamentalists and feel like they can seriously contribute to a biology forum with the ideas they've been taught about evolution. I really can't believe that it is even an issue in this country.

As for the intellectual company I keep, most Americans are intelligent, educated and able to participate in a stimulating intellectual conversation. At least where I spend most of my time.

As with all subjects, it's not reasonable to lump all Americans together. You'll find that we don't agree with each other on any subject. ........ Except for the fact that most Americans don't even flinch when we hear the term "leader of the free world" applied to our president. :)

Think you mean THEIR.

You're preaching to the choir here. You realize you're in the biology section, right? Just because a few people in America are threatened, that doesn't mean we're all a bunch a knuckle-dragging morons. We have the ability here to speak out and ne heard. They're just exercising their right. People who object in other countries don't have the same freedoms.
