I have an American flatmate, he and all of his friends insist that "the USA saved the UKs A.rse" in WWII.

Im not saying that we could not have won the war without American help but they seem to believe that America helped for different reasons.

I have always been told that the USA had loaned Britain a huge amount of money and sold them weapons on the understanding that we could pay them later.

So if the UK went down we would have dragged the US with.

Then there was Pearl harbour ... ... ...

OK I am just saying that the US was not selfless when joining WWII.

Is there anyone with an unbiased point of view who could give their opinion, its just that this is regularly thrown in my face by my flatmate and the more I hear it the more it winds me up.

Yes the Americans did charge us for their help and demanded the money as soon as the war ended despite the fact the UK was nearly bankrupt
