Time and time again I've heard that one should avoid discussing politics and religion.
I think those topics should be discussed over dinner, with friends at a party, over lunch at work....everywhere. Okay, maybe not religion, but I'm for discussing politics (actually, I love to talk about both topics). Here's why....in my imagination of history I see our forefathers discussing and debating...getting into heated "arguments" and opening each other's minds. It seems that in the 21rst century you're only allowed to discuss things with folks who agree with you OR on annomyous internet sites where good manners aren't expected or encouraged (and forget about anything in depth or really intellectual).
So here's my question.....Do you think Americans have watered down the freedom of speech as it applies to these instances? What's wrong with getting worked up over the things that matter instead of TV shows and who is sleeping with whom?
But I must add that I think the discussion can destroy friendships ONLY because good manners and respect are laid aside. Americans resort to name calling and insults all the time. Yeah, that WILL ruin a friendship. But think of how real discussions can broaden and mature a friendship!! Instead, we salivate over sex and TV shows. sad.
Yes, there is a lot of lite politics on TV....but where are they talking about the nitty gritty? I haven't found it. Not on TV. It's all low calorie discussions about delegates and super delegates.
