I take Lorazapam for anxiety(22 million prescriptions written in 2008,according to the AARP issue of 10/09).A controlled drug, though obviously very popular.I was happy with it.Dizziness is more complex.I believe, that isbecause the ear and balancing stuff
is "co mingled" in the middle of your head, that it is a tough cookie.I do not have vertigo, which is devastating, but do have periodic dizzy spells.Meclizine helps me ,but I am sure it is more of a stop-gap thing."Mec" is an antihistimine for motion sickness.
I think dramamine might have been its predisessor.I attended sessions for Inner Ear
Vestibular Disorder at a local hospital. It consisted mostly of exercises to enhance my sense of balance.I asked for a diploma, and received one.(a fun thing)The Meclizine came later at the E/R of another hospital. Bill

Google Chronic Dizziness and Anxiety...very good studies by Dr. Jeffrey P. Staab tying dizziness & anxiety. Lots of good info about his studies online. Bottom line treatment is w/SSRI.
Good luck!!

I read the study and it was very interesting. I do remeraber tho that when i was on valum i wasnt dizzy but i was still having panic attacks. but thats not an SSRI. so not sure what to think of that. i cant take SSRI's due to really bad side effects. maybe i will just have to learn to live with it and not stress over it to much. thanks for the help.

I too have recently developed chronic dizziness symptoms. I'm not taking any anti-anxiety meRAB, but I'm going through some major life changes (retirement, relocating), and from what I've read, severe stress can cause dizziness in some people. It is also not uncommon to get chronic dizziness as one ages. Mine is the same feeling I get after a couple of glasses of wine (lightheaded, slightly unbalanced), and I'm hoping it doesn't get worse. I don't want to stop riding the motorcycle just yet.

Panic and stress cause major dizziness with me. I am on 1 mg of Klonopin a day and I don't feel that it is enough. I used to be on 3 mgs a day plus Restoril for sleep (which is also a benzo) so I did not experience the dizziness and was calm all the time. Now I do still get panic attacks and major stress which make me dizzy and raise my BP. The dizziness is so bad that when I have it, I do not feel that I can drive.

I have been dizzy for 10 years, I then developed Panic Disorder. I have seen Dr. Staab at Mayo in Minnesota, but it failed to help. He said I should be on 4-6mg of xanax, I am on 5mg of xanax xr now (I'm 5'6" and weigh 125) and will take a .5mg regular xanax if it gets severe, my emergencey panic attack pill. The Doctors have said the same thing to me...my panic causes the dizziness. However, I was dizzy for 6 years before anxiety set in. I am on many other drugs along with antivert...aimed to stop dizziness but hasn't. I think I've tried every drug they have made lol.....but I believe the dizziness triggered the Panic Disorder. I have tried everything to get rid of the constant, daily dizziness that keeps getting worse. Johns Hopkins and Mayo Clinic didn't help along with hundreRAB of other doctors. There has been many theories why I'm dizzy...but none pan out. It caused me to not be able to play soccer for my college and has hindered my academic performance. It is neverending dizziness day after day. Unexplainable to people who don't experience it because there is no physical implications I don't feel well, which is difficult when dealing with family or others trying to understand the situation.

YES! I have Panic Disorder...on 5mg of xanax...and have been constantly dizzy, no let-ups, for 10 years (I'm 22). However, I have only had panic disorder for the past 5 years, and had no anxiety before even though I was still dizzy all of the time. Most of the doctors I have seen think the anxiety/panic cause my dizziness...however, there are a few, very few, that think the dizziness may have been the trigger for my panic disorder. I have always thought my dizziness was the root cause of my anxiety/panic and depression. I have been all around the country - literally :) [including Mayo and Johns Hopkins 2 times each]- for my dizziness, but they have not found the cause. It is extremely frustrating because it is greatly handicapping my academic performance and caused me to not be able to play soccer in college. Frankly, it sucks. It makes me angry as well, because everything makes me dizzy from watching TV to kayaking to writing. We are frustrated together............
