DIY 3 Point Lighting for Still Photography?

Let me preface by saying I am NOT a photographer! I am trying to set up a little "studio" to take some photos. I am struggling with the 3 point lighting technique.
1. I am using shop lights from the hardware store.
2. I don't know what type of light to use or how bright they need to be. I am also using parchment paper as a diffuser.
3. How far back should the lights go? I am noticing that they are blinding the subject.
4. I have my camera on the tungsten setting but everything still looks washed out.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Your shop light will become too hot and cause a fire if you put anything flammable near them.

If you like to use the shop light build yourself a frame which you cover with your diffusion material and put that far enough from the shop lights so they do not tough.
You need to experiment with the distance a bid as the subject you are shooting comes into the equation. Since you are shooting Tungsten you need to set your camera for that light or get a filter. You don't mention what kind of camera you use. If you can change the f stop close that down so the image is not over expose.
