Divisions on Petri Dishes?

My microbiology teacher asked us as extra-points question about the divisions on a petri dish.
Normally, you see, it is divided with a T, as shown on fiugre 5.2 of the following link: http://argento.bu.edu/ogaf/html/chp51exp2.htm
So the question was, how is each of these divisions called (and why is it called that way?) My theory is, there's a story behind the naming of those division. He wouldn't tell the answer, so I stayed with the question in mind
Can anyone help me find the answer?
