Is it considered a misdemeanor or infraction? The actual offense is 36CFR2.2(a)(2) and can be found on the code of federal regulations website. If I have no court date, and just a fine, would it just be an infraction?
The reason I ask is because I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to drive the 8 hrs to the federal court to fight it. I basically hung some cans with some peanut butter on a tree so I could hear if a bear was in the campsite, since I almost ran into one the night before. No animals were ever involved with what happened so I don't think I was charged with the correct offense and the officer said she was having trouble finding what to write me up for. But if it's just an infraction, it probably isn't even worth the drive and the hassle.
