District 9

It's out in the US on the 14th August, yet not out over here until the 4th of September I'm afraid. So you're just going to have to wait that little bit longer. But you just know it's seriously gonna be worth the extra wait though

it openned in NZ last night, same date as the US.

I very much enjoyed it!! nothing special - but still quite good. The more i think about it - the more i would like to see it again.

for just $30 million - its an amazing budget for a film such as this. And i just wonder how hollywood films need to cost so much.

It will be like by some - and will be hated by some, like all movies.

But i for one enjoyed it very much.

Accoring to Twitter it is quite literally AWESOME. Can't wait to go see it now, think I'll be arranging a works trip to the IMAX in Manchester

Saw this while 'doing Hollywood' in LA at the weekend and it's a solid 8/10 for me. Superb F/X (the best WETA have done yet IMO), and a very Robocop approach in humour and story (eg pessimistic about human nature and there's an OCP-style company in there).
The lead actor is great but when he has to get hyper his accent lapses into a sort of Beatles-y scouse which is rather strange!

This is the best movie ive seen this year so far,it was just brilliant, pretty gory in some parts and i really felt sorry for the main character, what he goes through is pure hell,i cannot wait 2 see more!

Is the whole film singularly a metaphor for apartheid?

I don't know if I could sit down and watch a science fiction film which shovels that theme down my throat. There are many excellent documentaries which already do that job.

I don't mind subtlety, but I do not want to go into the cinema and have a history lesson

There's not a lot of overt politics in it really other than what you choose to take away with you.
It's more of an exaggerated blackly comic Robocop-like satire attacking man's greed and intolerance. With aliens and stuff.

The original short, Alive in Joburg, can be seen on You Tube. I've seen D9 and have to say it is not to be missed. Yes there is social and political subtext but the viewer isn't hammered with it. Lookng forward to it being released here.

It's SO good, feels like something original (finally!) even though it's obviously influenced by pretty much every great sci-fi film of the last 25 years. Particularly Verhoeven's movies like Robocop and Starship Troopers, also Aliens. Brilliant effects and balls-out filmmaking, no holRAB barred.

It's not gonna be to everyone's tastes though. If you like cheesy BIG sci-fi films like Independance Day then you might be a little disappointed. This is more on the scale of 28 Days Later (and has some horror style moments like that too).
