I lived in an apartment for 22 months. During that time, I called my landlord numerous times regarding an issue with seepage (water leaking into my apartment) - first because of sprinklers that were spraying on my sliding glass door, and then because they did not have adequate drainage outside and rainwater was lapping at the front of the door.
The water wicked through the carpet and puddled, causing the carpet to rot away beneath an armchair and a whole section pulled out when we moved the chair. I did not notice this until I moved out. Now they are charging me to replace all of the carpet in the two bedroom unit
This was directly caused by repairs that they kept postponing - the sprinkler issue was not resolved for 3 weeks and they didn't address the seepage problem for over seven days. I do not think it's fair for them to charge for carpet replacement because of damage due to their negligence.
This was in Washington State. What is the best way for me to fight this and do I have any chance of winning?
