Disney re-release dvRAB because every couple of years, a big deal is made about the re-release so it will be introduced to a new generation of kiRAB, where as if it were available all the time, Disney Classics will be over looked by new releases. Smart planning i think.
they did this when VHS was still alive and kicking, it's nothing new.
the next time they release Toy Story, it will probably be the HD-DVD/Blue-Ry version, as the last was the 10th anniversary and that was mean't to be the best print of Toy Story ever.
I wouldn't say Disney re-release all their movies every couple of years ,because they dont.
The animated classics like Snow White etc dont get re-released.
A handful of them like Jungle Book,Lady and The Tramp etc came out at the dawn of dvd in extras free versions but once Disney caught on they withdrew them.
They made a list of about 10 titles that would receive the limited edition special edition treatment.
Snow White etc fall into that category and they will likely not return until an HD release.
Many of their other ordinary titles like Toy Story and the lesser animations (Sword IN the Stone,Dumbo etc) are usually available permanently and treated like studios treat their regular films--with updates every few years.
Unfortunately Disney UK treat their audience like children compared to Disney US who take their audience more seriously so R2 misses out on some stellar releases.
Pollyanna/Parent Trap/20000 Leagues Under The Sea and others all have breathtaking 2 disc releases in the US with commentaries ,documentaries and much more ,and usually cheaper than their R2 single disc extras free ripoff.
This same attitude has also seen the UK getting very few of the excellent Walt Disney Treasures releases that are an annual event on R1
the UK edition of The Love Bug is terrible, it only has 3 extras.
where the US got a 2 disc edition, which was packed with stills, radio spots, trailers, documentaries, deleted scenes and more.
thank heavens for multi-region dvd players!
