In order to efficiently distribute goods, the central planner would need perfect information, and have no selfish motives himself. This will never happen. A free market sends signals about supply and demand. Something a benevolent, central planner cannot possibly know at any and all points in time. So the greed of private markets and private property is significantly more efficient than the greed and incompetence of government.
