Art works (i.e. paintings, sculptures, etc.) were considered vanity (which was considered a sin) and during the Protestant Reformation they destroyed thousands of pieces of Art (They smashed sculptures and burned paintings) in order to purge their cities of evil.
The art world lost some great and wonderful pieces that we will never get a chance to admire or study. : (
