Africa is estimated to have more than 88% of people living with HIV and 92% of all AIDS deaths in 2007.
In the worst affected countries, average life expectancy has fallen by twenty years because of the epidemic. Life expectancy at birth in Swaziland is just 31 years - less than half of what it would be without AIDS. http://search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A0oG7nnDCtNNjkEAbu1XNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEyYjBkY2U2BHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMgRjb2xvA2FjMgR2dGlkA0g0NjVfODI-/SIG=11v4odf1t/EXP=1305698083/**http%3a//www.avert.org/aids-impact-africa.htm
As for prevention, some of the African people's beliefs and customs help the spread of HIV/AIDS. Many beliefs surround condom use such as the idea that condoms stifles the traditional power of the man in his community. Major African political leaders have denied the link between HIV and AIDS, and many are suspicious of medical treatments preferring traditional medicines that don't work over scientifically proven medicine. Some countries are just too poor to pay for medicine and education for preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
