Read the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson stated all the reasons why the colonists had to declare their independence. The British expected the colonists to pay for their war with France. The British closed Boston Harbor and fired upon Americans with the Boston Massacre and the attack on Lexington and Concord. The British also paid Indians to kill colonists that attempted to go west of the Appalachian Mountains.
