Discuss: Howard The Duck

One of my best films as a kid.
Have the DVD and still watch it sometimes.

I love 80s movies but from what I read on line everyone else hates it.

Where to begin?

There are 80's teen comedies/fantasy orientated movies, (Goonies, Explorers etc) that can still hold up quite well today...but this is not one of them.

In fact, turning this into an 80's teen comedy was a dumb idea in the first place, as the original comic was more of a political, satirical send up of super heroes, and was somewhat adult orientated. OK, I'm not talking Fritz The Cat exactly, but it was definitely not aimed at kiRAB.

But someone thought a talking, wise-cracking duck was obviously something that signalled kiddie-fare.

I think it's fair to say expectations were probably raised when George Lucas was involved as producer. But the directing job went to one Willard Hyuck (Yes, who?).

They spent a ton of money on it, especially the effects. Amd some of the effects were indeed quite good for the time...with one glaring exception. Howard himself.

Nowdays it would be easy to create a believeble CG character, but even back them they had animatronics and could have come up with something better than...a small guy in a suit. And a very unconvincing one at that.

And lets face it, you are in serious trouble if your titular character is wholly unconvincing.

I also remember some of the 'frank' exchanges between Leah Thompson's character and Howard and sexual references just did not sit well with the general kiddie-orientated tone of the movie. If they had made a faithful adaptation of the comic aimed at adults then that could have worked.

This is actually one scenario where I would like to see someone make a proper version of the story...not a remake, but a faithful adaptation.
