Disc Herniation

I just got a MRI report and was hoping someone could help explain it.

At C5-C6 large left posterolateral disc herniation is seen compressing the spinal cord as well as the nerve root exiting on the left at this level.

Large left posterolateral disc herniation at C5-C6 with extruded fragment behind the body of C5. Displacement and compression of the cord at this level, APdiameter of the cord is 7.9 mm. This is consistant with acquired spinal stenosis. Minimal degenerative changes of the disc at C6-C7 are also seen, narrowing and more advanced degenerative changes of C5-C6. Reversal of cervical lordosis is also seen.

Is this serious?? Haven't got insurance so having hard time getting in to see someone. I know the pain is still there not as bad now though, but it comes and goes. Pain goes from neck all the way down left arm.

i really am sorry you don;t have ins, thats just sick really. my son was in the same situation not to long ago. honestly? what you have going on DOES need some intervention. somehow you really do need to be seen and evaluated by a good neurosurgeon for this level of actual cord compression. while people can live with plain old hernaited discs and be treated more conservatively, actual cord compression and what other findings you have, really do need attention soon. i don;t want to freak you out here, really, but what you have going on up there could eventually paralyze you if this goes untreated or you have even a fender bender type accident that would just cause that sudden jerking of your c spine area into your cord. your cord is just a bit compromised by the herniations and what sounds like a good level of stenosis going there too. i can only imagine how much real pain and symptoms this is already causing you.

at the very least, you DO need to be seen and evaluated by a good neurosurgeron to find out just where you are actually at with all these findings and what your options are at this point. from what i have read,i really unfortunetly think that surgical intervetion may be your only option at this point. i know thats not what you wanted to hear but your findings are just a bit scarey and much more impactful than 'just' some herniated discs impinging upon nerves. your cord is being involved and compromised here too,and thats what ups that need. just so you know there is a really good spinal board way down below here in the "S" section. alot of good experienced and knowledgable people down there who could also maybe give you some options and insight on this. you just have some pretty dramatic findings that need to be evaluated by a good experienced neurosurgeon. sorry i couldn;t give you better news or options. i know the no ins thing sucks, and it just should not be this way in the country we live in. i do wish you a ton of luck with this, please keep me posted on what you find out and how you are doing,K? I had the same problem and put up with the pain for 7months hoping that it would go away untill one night I had to go to ER because the pain was so bad in my left arm I could not take it any more got an MRI and had surgery that was suppose to take 2.5 hrs instead it took 4.5 to almost 5 hrs because the disk was fractured really bad, I have had three other friends that have the same problem and it went away with out surgery so gl. As fot the 7.9 not sure they never told me I was just in so much pain I could not take it any more.
