I have 2 bikes on with v brakes the other with disc brakes , i have to say that i find disc brakes temperamental and in no way as effective as V brakes . I know the basic idea of disc brakes is lower maintenance but it is obvious to one that they are anything but , for eg in road use which is what most mountain bikes get used on they only have to get a touch of road grease on them and they become almost useless , indeed the pads tend soak up the grease so no matter how much you clean the disc with alcohol , degreasant etc etc they still fade .
V brakes on the other hand are far less affected and woud say just as good in the rain , cetainly the lower end disc brake which are cable operated are absolute crap , and are a complete con , they sell purely on looks as they present a modern look , in truth they are almost dangerously weak and the pads almost criminally over priced when you consider the amount of material used in comparison to a car disc pad .
my advice to anyone getting a new bike would be to stay away from disc models , it speaks volumes that bike makers still make models with V brakes as an alternative , i dont think they ever completely phase out V brakes
