DirecTV & Dish consider merging again, speculation on BEV

First off, let me say I think this has no chance of ever happening... like, ever. Sure, the FCC let the two satellite radio companies merge, but satellite TV is a lucrative and different world. It's not like comparing apples and oranges here.

Now in the off chance they were allowed, it'd make total sense for a combined DirectDish company to use DirecTV's technology, since it actually is secure (and IMHO, superior). That means switching out Bell ExpressVu equipment w/ DirecTV's and finally a secure platform.

Who knows... maybe they can get the FCC to believe Dish will never have a secure platform and letting them merge helps thwart piracy, so therefore better for the overall satellite television industry and better for the consumer.

The idea of stopping BEV theft seems like something their parent company would want to do by switching to different technology (DTV's?). Maybe it's too expensive of a feat to attempt (I'd say "big", but swapping out Dish receivers/dishes to DirecTV in the States is far, far more invasive!). Or maybe they say they want to end piracy, but turn a blind eye so long as thieves aren't paying the competition. Maybe it's little of all.

DirecTV's system is "secure" because it is easiest to go for the lowest hanging fruit (i.e. Dish & BEV). I have no doubt that if all satellite systems went to Videoguard encryption it would be made vulnerable.

this is such a great idea, combining forces & saving bandwidth is all beneficial to the consumers. in the latest quarterly report, DISH has been losing customers and churn rates are up. Imagine HBO & many American favorites.

Ok, for starts both Dish & Direct are profitable corporations, the FCC barely approved XM & Sirius merger, I doubt they would ever approve a direct & dish merger.

Second of all if a merger did happen, they would be using Dish Network/Echostar equipment and not DirecTv's crappy DSS, since Direct is already moving towards DVB2, but you can be guaranteed that they would use NDS encryption, since Directv pretty well owns NDS now.

Third, all this would have no effect on ExpressVu in Canada other than possibly changing to NDS encryption also, but this would all be years down the road and is not going to happen anytime soon.

I'm not to sure about that. Unlike here in Canada where you have basicaly Bev Sc or your local cable company in the US you now have phone companies offering TV via phone lines. That hasn't happen here yet and I dought it will for some time.

As well lok at the pop/ Inm the use ypou have over 250 million people hile here in Canada you have about 35 million, heck if you put all Canada's pop would even add up to Dish & DTV sub base.

So its possible.

As for the "technical issue? are Dish & DTV receivers conpatibable? If so that might be fine on that part but its the sats the issue If there using the same sats as BEV from my understanding is that they need to be at least 9 degreess apart, so Dish has 110 and DTV has 111 to close to work together.

Would a BEV/DTV.DISH merger or partnership work maybe.

But alot of permission would be needed,. This might help BEV out by sharing all the sats by putting US & Canadian signals spreed between them this might wortk.

This thread is strange. I don't have a clue what a potential merger south of the border has to do with Canada?

Will not happen soon. Sirius and XM were ordered to retain the current broadcast equipment and develop a receiver that handles both. Due to fundamental incompatibility, it will be many years before the services are fully combined.

DirecTV and Dish are more compatible than Sirius/XM but I expect that similar terms would apply. As for the 110/111 issue, Dish and DirecTV use different bands at those locations. All DBS slots are 9 degrees apart. There is some talk about narrowing that to 4.5 but it would create some technical issues.
