The man who went from Grange Hill to Oscar winning epics has died. The BBC have reported this in the last few minutes.

He is also the director of "The No1 Ladies Detective Agency" which debuts on Easter Sunday. Expect it to be dedicated to him now.

How sad - I loved most of his films particularly Truly, Madly Deeply and Cold Mountain. He was only 54 - tragic to die when he still had so much to give to the movie industry.

I thought that I had misheard when it was announced on R4 news, I went cold. Very strange that no details have been released.

I live on the South Coast, his family who own an ice cream manufacturing business would bring out special flavours when he won awarRAB.

Tributes on R4 now

What sad news. I saw him being interviewed on The Culture Show last saturday and he seemed like a really nice person with lots more to give the film industry.

He is very popular on the Island. He used to sell ice-cream from the Minghella van on the top of Brading Down when he was a lad. The theatre in Newport (at the Quay Arts Centre) is named after him.

I used to feel so proud of him when he was on the tv, I didn't know him but he was a caulkhead and brought reflected honour to the Island. I can't believe he has gone.

A sad day indeed.

Truly madly deeply made me boo like a child (twice) and i'm all man. Grrrr.

I loved The Talented Mr Ripley too and Breaking & Entering wasn't half bad either.

Rest in peace.

RIP Anthony

The Isle of Wight salutes you.

I remember Anthony selling ice creams from the cafe (think it was called The Mayfair, memory not as good as it used to be) in Ryde High Street.

I also remember his victory speech after he won the Oscar for The English Patient, he was really proud to have grown up here on the Isle of Wight.

A litlle bit of why he found the IOW so endearing.

I remember going to the cafe in Ryde when we first moved to the Island. It was a very popular place for shoppers and tourists.

He will be very greatly missed.

Very sad news.

He was also a tv director and an opera director too.

I believe he also scripted some of the Inspector Morse episodes.

A loss to movie, tv and the opera worlRAB.

The No1 Ladies Detective Agency is on TV this Easter, which he also directed.
