Difficulty with exercising, particularly bicycle rides?

First of all, I'll admit that I'm very unfit. I don't exercise properly, if at all, and I spend all day, every day sitting at the computer. I want to change this, as I am beginning to get worried about my body.
I went for a bike ride today, but only barely managed to last 5 minutes. I assume I was just pushing myself too hard, as I returned home exhausted, dizzy, and with aching pain in my throat and chest.
I just want to make sure that these are to be expected if I haven't exercised in a long time? I'm hoping this just means I need to ease myself into it a bit more, rather than jumping straight into a quite hard bike ride?
In response to wle:
I can climb stairs and do every-day things just fine. No difficulty in walking to the local shops, or up the 2 flights of stairs to my bedroom (maybe slightly out of breath, but nothing bad enough that I suffer).
Also it wasn't all uphill, but I had it on a fairly high gear, and there were some more uphill bits. Enough that it kinda evens out.
