What is the difference between neural formaminal stenosis and central canal stenosis? Apparently I have both at 2 levels. And just the foraminal stenosis at another. Is one worse than the other? Thanks
Stenosis is a Greek word that means choking. In medical terms it means a narrowing of a normally larger opening. Spinal stenosis is the general catch-all name for the disease that includes central stenosis, foraminal stenosis, etc. The difference is just in the location: formainal stenosis means that the foramin has become narrow and the nerve roots are getting squished when they try to exit. Central canal stenosis means that the canal itself is becoming narrowed and the spinal nerves become compressed. The symptoms are pretty much the same, often including pain in the buttocks, thighs and calves when walking or standing. I don't think that you could say one is worse than the other.
i have severe stenosis in both left and right side of body, and would say choking or strangulation is the best discription, especially of ovaries, ill never forget that pain,i hope you do not have this. marywoo
