Different kind of leg pain

Hi,

I was just trying to throw out a new possibility. PMR is a disease of the autoimmune system. I guess the symptoms can be very similar to rheumatoid arthritis -- there is often pain and stiffness in the joints of the arms, legs, neck, hips...and like I said, my legs just ached like nothing I'd ever experienced. It generally runs its course in one to two years, or prednisone knocks it right out. There are certain blood tests that are indicators of whether it is PMR...sed rate is one of them.

Hi all!! I have been having severe pain in both legs for a few days now and wondering about RLS. It usually starts in the evening and it is difficult to describe. The best way I can describe it is achy like a toothache and if I lay down or try putting my feet up it seems to get worse. I have always had some leg pain due to spinal stenosis but that pain is burning and nurabness and gets better with rest. Do these symptoms seem familiar to anyone. I see my PM the 21st so I will ask her too but in the mean time I was wondering if anyone could give me advice and maybe some home remedy that I could try until I see my doctor. Thanks, Dee

Hi,Dee just wanted to tell you that i also have stenosis, and i would definately describe it as a toothache pain, years ago it only hurt while standing then it progressed to hurting while i was sleeping,my pm gave me an esi injection and my legs have been great at night,i made the mistake of doing to much after the injection and not icing my spine but now i know better and just wanted to let you know they did help with that horrible pain.iam so sorry you have to go through this that pain is indescribable..hope you get some relief marywoo

Thanks mary, I just got back from my PM and she said I had some major inflammation. So it looks like I will be getting an epi in the near future. In the mean time she recommended something called bromide from the health food store. Apparently, it is a natural anti-inflammatory and I am going to give it a try since I am allergic to n-saiRAB and oral steroiRAB keep me awake for days. I will let you know if it works, Take Care. Dee

Hi Deeann!

I'm sorry you have worsening leg pain. Your pain does sound familiar to me especially before I had surgery for my stenosis. I had awful achy, almost cramp-like pains in my legs while standing and even laying down. This all didn't happen right away either. It all progressed over a few years time. After a while, I could not lay flat at all. Of course I cannot say for sure if yours is due to stenosis, as there could be other possibilities. There is another natural anti-inflammatory that recently had studies done, called boswellia serrata with AKBA. The study seemed to show alot of pain relief in people with knee OA and inflammation. So..I just ordered some to see if it might help me in some way at all. I just started taking it, so I don't know yet if it will benefit me, but I certainly will try it.

Do you have the ESI scheduled yet? Did your doc say what they think is causing all that inflammation? Have you ever had any blood work done to check for various autoimmune diseases?

This leg thing is driving me crazy. I know one thing for sure it is 100x worse right before my period. So I am hurting pretty bad right now. I am trying to hold off on doing another ESI for awhile. (If I can) I just feel like I a have had so much done-I have been doing prolotherapy every other month and I am just tired of being poked and probed. I know that is not a very good attitude but I just feel like I need a break. As for the auto immune stuff I was tested for Lupus and it came back negative (Thank God). I have been told that I have Fibromyalgia but I haven't had a flare in a long time so I guess maybe it may be coming back. Its been so long since I have had a flare I had almost forgotten what it was like! So I am just hanging in there and trying to have a fun and active summer. How are you doing? I hope your recovery is going well and you are getting lots of R&R. Take Care, Dee :)

Is there any possibility you might have polymyalgia rheumatica? I had it a nuraber of years ago -- it is a disease that causes inflammation. When I had it, I thought nothing could hurt as much. That was before my back started acting up!

It mainly affects the legs and they just ache and ache, almost like a really terrible case of the flu. it is one of those things that they diagnose by eliminating everything else.

If you don't get any relief, you might mention it to your doctor.

I am not sure what the cause of the inflammation is but it sure does hurt. I was looking stuff up earlier and along with my lurabar fusion I also have a cervical fusion-anyway I read the cervical spine could be causing the problem. When I had my c-fusion they only fixed 2 of 3 levels because the doctor said 3 levels would be a very difficult recovery and I would probably have to get the last level done eventually. I remeraber having leg problems before that surgery too. I had a change in my gait and pain in my arms and legs and I tripped a lot and would drop things all the time. There was no spinal fluid in my neck and I had huge bone spurs which doc says caused that. So I hope this bromide or an ESI does the trick-I really don't want anymore surgery. I will keep in mind what you said about polymyalgia rheumatica. How do they diagnose that?

Hi Dee ~

What do you think of the prolotherapy? What is the condition you are having it for? I've been reading all about it and am curious what you think about it.

It might be worth having a little blood drawn for a sed rate to test for polymyalgia rheumatica if you ca't get an answer for the leg pain.

Hi MM, I have prolotherapy in my cervical and lurabar spine in hopes of strengthening ligaments and regrowing some disc material to alleviate DDD pain. I have had really good results with in my neck and some relief in my back. I have had fusions in both areas but still have some of the same issues as before surgery. My neck was hurting almost as much as pre-surgery and I was afraid I was going to have to have another fusion but my Pm wanted to try prolotherapy and after 4 treatments my neck felt about 75% better. So when I started to have more lurabar pain I thought I'd try prolo , and it has helped some but not as much as in my neck. As for my leg pain my last MRI showed spinal stenosis was worsening in both cervical and lurabar spine so I guess thats part of the problem. I have been keeping a pain journal and whatever it is it spikes about a week before and during my period. Sometimes I wonder if I should have had a hysterectomy instead of a fusion!!
