Differences between M50 & C50 engines

I was reading this and found it interesting. It is from the site "Motorcycle Cruiser".

"There are minor differences in the (M50) engine (as compared to the C50). The M50 has slightly different rocker-arm shafts, which necessitate different breather covers, which in turn require small cylinder-head changes. It also uses split crankshaft bearings that slightly change the crankcase, which is painted black. The two bikes have different airboxes, and the M50 has a smaller radiator that nonetheless cools a bit better because of additional finning on the core."

I didn't know either. I just assumed it was the same engine and that the airbox differences were solely cosmetic. Do the airboxes have the same air volume dimensions or does the M50 have a slightly larger volume?

Yeah, we've covered this before. Suzuki seems to be run by the marketing people, who insist that 805 CCs is the perfect mid-sized cruiser. So every mid-sized Suzuki cruiser uses a motor of this size, even though they are all different. Let's see if I can remember all the versions...
- VX800, the original version
- VX 800 European version, with different cams
- VS 800 Intruder (early), same as VX original but with electric fuel pump
- VZ800 Marauder (early), different (narrower) bottom end for chain drive, modified top end from VS800
- VL800 Volusia, almost completely different from all previous versions
- VZ800 Marauder (late) original VZ800 top end with different bottom end for shaft drive
- VS800 Intruder (late) same as early VS800 but in black rather than finished aluminum, different electronics
- VL800 C50- same as VL800 Volusia but with fuel injection and related head changes.
- VS800 S50- Same as VS800 (late) but with extra bosses ont he cylinder castings for attachment of the fake air cleaner
- VZ800 M50- similar to C50 but with modified heads, different crankcases, and painted black.

I would HATE to be the Suzuki parts guy, trying to keep track of 10 different 805cc motors.

When I call the suzuki parts guy up, I'll just tell him "I got one of dem dere 800s." Then he can figure it out.

Thanks for the authoritative post. Cool.

Basically yes, but the versions have differences, and thus different part numbers for many items. Order the wrong version cylinder, for example, and it will not have the bosses for the tool box on you S50, or it may be the wrong color. Or try and put the electronic brain box and wiring harness from a VX on a VS, and things won't work right (different ignition curves, no power to the fuel pump).
So as a Suzuki parts guys you need all ten sets of microfiche.
