My road bike tires are smooth except for the part that contacts the road which has a very thin, slightly elevated tread.
Other road tires are completely smooth and it seems that it has more contact with the road.
I think that the thinner width of the elevated tread results in less kinetic energy loss for the tire than the other road tire with more contact with the road. Is this true? Or does it really matter?
