Difference between When The Wind Blows and Maximum Ride?!?!?

I seriously don't get it! I am a HUGE fan of the Maximum Ride series, so I looked up Patterson's other novels. When the Wind Blows sounds almost IDENTICAL to Maximum Ride! Both main characters are girls named Max that have wings and can fly. Both novels have the same setting. So if someone's read both these books, could you please tell me what the difference is??! I want to read When The Wind Blows, but it seems like that would be redundant. Thank you!!!

Ah, the same question has bothered me quite a bit. I think that both stories pretty much have the same premise and almost the same characters but the Max's are different and When the Wind Blows after features parental figures to Max and her group. However, the stories do differ quite a bit so reading when the wind blows isn't a complete waste of time!

In the beginning of the first Maximum Ride book (before the Prologue) it says this:

To the Reader:

The idea for Maximum Ride comes from earlier books of mine called When the Wind Blows and The Lake House, which also feature a character named Max who escapes from a quite despicable School. Most of the similarities end there. Max and the other kids in Maximum Ride are not the same Max and kids featured in those two books. Nor do Frannie and Kit play any part in Maximum Ride. I hope you enjoy the ride anyways.
