difference between cyclone,typhoon and a tropical storm>?

"Tropical revolving storm" is indeed the general term for one single phenomenon. They are called hurricanes in the Caribbean, cyclones in the Indian Ocean and typhoons in the far east (from Chinese tai fung = great wind); but as you rightly say, they are all the same thing.
