Diet vs Exercise: What's more effective?

People always say dieting is a bad idea because you're likely to gain your weight back once you're off the diet, especially because your body will start getting used to it, and lower its daily calorie requirement. In the past I relied mostly on exercise to lose weight (my eating habit is quite healthy as is), and whenever I get caught up with college/work and slack off my workouts, I start gaining weight WITHOUT having changed my eating habit whatsoever.

Doesn't that imply that my body is also likely to get used to my workouts and therefore, start gaining weight when I stop exercising? If it is true, then I think I'd like to cut down more of my daily calories and rely primarily on dieting and exercising as a secondary thing..
