Diesel Air Filter - Ford Fiesta X Reg?

How can I check if air is getting into my diesel filter?
When I drive my car for long periods of time (2hours) etc, the car starts to rev itself. When I switch the engine off and back on again the revving stops, but starts again after a few minutes of driving. I spoke to a mechanic and they told me that air could be getting into the diesel filter?!
 
If you are having trouble starting, or if you loose power while running that can be an indication of air being drawn into the fule lies before the fliter, at the filter or after the filter and leading to the injector pump.
However not starting can be caused by other things as well. Please describe any other symptoms so we cna help you spot the difficulty.

A diesel as heating eleaments to heat the fuel for it to crank so have them checked allso.
