Im new to the forum and had a question im getting an SV650 as my first bike and after i get some skills and proficiency with that i wantt o get an 848 is that too big of a jump?

Me - SV650, R1, 848

SV is the best beginner bike you can buy. Get your accidental drops out of the way with a learner bike, or you'll be shelling out $$ left and right for Ducati parts.

compare cost of fairings, mirrors, levers, to suzuki.

Good plan though.

Good advice already given by all...SV650 is a great first bike, as long as you approach it sensibly. Easy to ride, reliable, good handling, etc. Get some training. Not only basic, but advanced if you're going to be riding hard. Don't try to learn it all on your own. Take advantage of the learning all of us have done and are still doing! Don't jump to the 848 too soon. Give yourself time to really hone some skills. Finally, ATGATT (All The Gear, All The Time)! Show your riding buddies you know what's its all about!

Welcome Aboard!

Good thoughts but start with the SV, ride it for a while, then decide what bike you want next. It's hard to say "I know I want X bike" if you've never ridden extensively before.

Look at it like this: if you get the SV and can't even get out of your driveway without dropping it for six straight months, then yes, it is too big of a jump. If you get the SV and in three months your blowing past R1 on the track days, then maybe you want something bigger. Get the experience, then ask questions about the future. By then you probably won't have to ask, you'll know for yourself.

A lot of good advice here. I would also suggest since it's a beginning bike you will move out of after about 3000-5000 miles or a year, consider strongly buying a used bike that someone else has already taken the hit on the depreciation.
