The catechism “Who really was Zoroaster?” has produced a bewildering variety of answers. Some evidence conveys the impression that he was by birth a Mede; others can be said without fear of contradiction he ranks among the greatest social reformers of humanity. From the Gathas to Shahnameh, many legends and self-contradictory traditional tales are available to us, not to mention Nietzsche’s tedious account and a few anecdotes to be found in Greek authors; but leaving these aside the only historical averment seems certainly not enough to justify such fame in any way.
