Did you have a "Birthday Meal" when you were a kid?

Yes. Sauerbraten. Accompaniments varied. Some potato
thing--probably started out being mashed potatoes and in later
years became potato pancakes. French cut green beans (I think).
Bohemian Club Salad. When I got old enough to realize that I
preferred pie to cake, blueberry pie (in January).

Oh, btw, my daughter's only set thing is chocolate cake. I used
to make this--a practically (or totally) flourless one. Then
there was the year that the oven turned out not to be working
properly and the cake wasn't as expected. I guess she decided I
can't bake, so she wants cakes from the city that we used to live in.

heh! My mom used to make cakes for Easter in such a thing (must
have been before we switched to strawberry or strawberry-rhubarb
pie). In fact, the mold is one of the few things left in the
basement at the old house that I need to pack up and move.

Mine as well! I love German chocolate cake. My mother pours ganache over
the layers of cake and uses the frosting for the center and the top of
the cake leaving the ganache for the sides. Beautiful and tasty!

Same here. My choice was always either lasagna or roast beast. When my
brother, sister and I got older, we repeated the tradition for our
parents, and we'd plan, shop, cook and clean up all at their house so
they didn't have to travel for it, which was what they wanted.

Mine was cream salmon on patty shells, french fries and peas. My mother
used to serve it at my birthday parties and my friends loved it.
