My wife picked up a stick from a loose compost pile and a slimy, jelly-like mass was attached to it. The odor was not offensive. Black with obvious modules of varying sizes in the mass. Weather has been moderate - avg. 50-60 F, avg rain. Thought it might be a truffle but not associated with tree or in forest - in open area of garden that has a temp compost of some kitchen and garden waste.
