Did troops during WWII get to go home for holidays?

I don't know if this is a silly question or not, I'm doing some research for a story I am writing and was wondering if troops during the second world war ever got to go home to see their families?

Also, at the end of the war, when were the troops sent back? Was it straight away or did the stagger it?
