It's been written that President Lincoln orchestrated the shutting down of literally hundreds of opposition newspapers in the northern states during the American Civil War, along with the destruction of printing presses and the imprisonment of newspaper editors and owners.
That is one side of the issue, and I am curious to read the other. Did Lincoln ever address why he did those things? Was he even really responsible or is he just the scapegoat?
