Did Pirates Suffer from Photo-phobia?

Working on a group 4 project for the International Baccalaureate (IB) for first year and our research topic is pirates! (Unusual huh?) Anyway I need biology related information about pirates, myths or facts and I was wondering if the eye patch is related to photo-phobia?
 
An eye patch would have been worn to protect an empty socket -

Maybe the pirate lost his eye cause his flint-lock blew up in his face or some buccuneer took his eye out with a cutless
